HELPFUL HINTS FOR THE JUDGES

  1. Each speech should have a distinct opening, body and conclusion. This should include an address to the Master of Ceremonies and an acknowledgment of the audience. Both the opening and the conclusion should be in appropriate length for the speech.

  2. All speeches must be significantly original. Plagiarism is not acceptable and is ground for disqualification. Quotations from other speakers and sources must be acknowledged.

  3. There should be a recognizable purpose to each speech. To entertain is a purpose.

  4. Body language and gestures must add to the speech.

  5. Stage presence indicates the speaker’s comfort level.

  6. The speaker’s appearance should be appropriate to the speech.

  7. If props are used, they must support the speech, be displayed with confidence and used effectively.

  8. Notes are acceptable. If they are used, the speaker should do so inconspicuously.

  9. Vernacular should only be used if appropriate to the speech. Socially unacceptable language is to be avoided.

  10. Be confident in your decision. Complete the feedback form for the contestant to the best of your ability. They will appreciate it.

CONSIDER WRITING YOUR SPEAKERS COMMENTS AS THE SPEAKER IS DELIVERING THEIR PRESENTATION.
